Westland wildlife control Tip of the Month:
WHAT TO DO ABOUT A CAGE-SHY (HARD TO TRAP) WILD ANIMAL
If you notice that there are wild animals living in your home, causing different kinds of damages, you should do all you can to get rid of them quickly. Trapping is one of the most effective ways to remove wild animals from a home. However, it can be quite frustrating to set a trap, monitor it for days, and end up catching nothing. Most times, your traps do not capture wild animals because of certain avoidable mistakes you make while setting them. If you don’t do the right thing, wild animals will keep avoiding your traps. Here are some tips that can help you capture a cage-shy wild animal.
The Location of the Trap
Placing your traps in the wrong location will only jeopardize all your efforts. If you want to capture wild animals, you need to place your traps in the line of their tracks, not far from it. Animals don’t stray off their tracks during movement, and will most likely not see the trap if you place it somewhere else. Wild animals are smart creatures. Most of them have evolved to a point where they know what traps are. This is why it is not advisable to release a wild animal into the wild close to other properties after capturing it – since the creature now knows how traps work, it will become a trap-shy animal.
If your trap captures a wild animal, do not release the creature close to your property. If you do, when it returns and starts damaging things in your home again, removing it won’t be so easy. To make your trapping more effective, monitor the movement of the wild animal in your home, and find out the routes it takes. Then place your traps in those locations. Once the animal gets to that location, it will be curious to find out what’s in the trap.
Choose the Right Bait
Honestly, you can use almost anything as bait. Most wild animals are scavengers and would eat anything they can find. They would do anything to get a taste of any “free food” they find in their path – even entering a trap. In fact, rats are known to consume feces left by humans and other animals, like dogs, because they find it nutritious.
Almost anything can pass as bait. However, it is important to note that fresh food is more likely to get spoilt quicker, and once a bait becomes stale it loses its essence. If you use fresh fruit as bait, you’ll see lots of bees, wasps, and ants swooping in to enjoy the sweet nectar. If you use fresh meat as bait, you’ll have flies moving in and out of the trap and creating maggots in the process. Fresh food works perfectly when used as bait. However, you need to check it frequently and change it periodically. Wild animals don’t mind eating stale food, but you need to change the bait regularly because it can pose bigger problems for you.
Baiting Traps Without Setting Them
You can win the trust of cage-shy animals by providing them free food for some time – baiting the traps without setting them. This way, the wild animal can enter the trap, consume the food, and move away freely. After eating out of the trap for a couple of nights, the animal will get used to the trap and may even bring some of its family members to join the feast. On the night when you set the trap, the animal won’t know. It will stroll in, eat the food, and then get caught.
